Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a species of pathogenic bacteria that is responsible for most cases of Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a serious infection that mainly attacks the lungs and is spread through respiratory fluid in the air, mostly from the coughing and sneezing of infected individuals. The disease stays latent in 90% of individuals who contract tuberculosis, but if the infection becomes active, will kill approximately 50% of individuals who do not seek treatment. Symptoms include a chronic cough, blood in mucus, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. The treatment of Tuberculosis is difficult and requires a strict regimen of antibiotics over a long period of time, however, there has been an increasing resistance to antibiotics amongst mutating strains of the infection.
